The Melody Mention: Michelle Obama Taps Top Female Artists for “This Is For My Girls”
A new #GirlPower anthem couldn’t come at a better time! The month of March is also known as Women’s History Month, in which people celebrate the accomplishments and contributions women have made in the world. First Lady Michelle Obama created the #62MillionGirls campaign in support of girls’ education worldwide. To give the campaign a bit more of an edge and reach a wider audience, she added the perfect tune with “This Is For My Girls.”
The powerful track was written by Diane Warren, who has penned hits for major artists such as Celine Dion and Beyonce. “This Is For My Girls” features some of today’s hottest female artists including Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliott, Zendaya, Kelly Rowland, and Janelle Monae. Not only do each of these ladies allude fierceness, strength, intelligence, and ambition, but a few them owe their claim to fame by singing past women anthems. Let’s not forget Kelly Rowland’s days in Destiny’s Child singing “Independent Women” and “Survivor.” While American Idol alum Kelly Clarkson scored a big hit with “Miss Independent” and Janelle Monae teamed up with Erykah Badu on “QUEEN.” Fellow fierce ladies on the track are Lea Michelle, Chloe & Halle, and Jadagrace.
The song sends a positive message from beginning to end starting with the first verse, “There’s beauty in your soul / That’s what makes you beautiful / Don’t let nobody ever make you doubt it.” Positive images should be instilled in a girl’s mind at a young age, so when she gets older, she won’t be afraid to talk the talk and walk the walk. The world needs “This Is For My Girls” in the same as realm BET’s Black Girls Rock and Beyonce’s “Run The World (Girls)” track. Women should be teaching the young girls how to go after their dreams and take risks. So what’s the melody behind “This Is For My Girls”? Uplifting women in today’s society is vital for success and as long as we have each other’s backs, nobody can stop us.
